Every other repair in our store is about a device. This one is not.<\/p>\n
Nobody walks in worried about a hard drive. They walk in worried about eight years of photographs, a dissertation due Thursday, or the only copy of a small business’s invoicing. The hardware is incidental. What matters is what is on it.<\/p>\n
Which is why this article is mostly about what not to do, because with data the damage is usually self-inflicted after the failure rather than during it.<\/p>\n
Stop using it. That is the whole first step.<\/strong><\/p>\n Whatever the device is, whatever it is doing, stop.<\/p>\n Every attempt to make a failing drive work costs you a little of what is left on it. Restarting repeatedly, running recovery software downloaded in a panic, plugging it in again to check whether it has fixed itself overnight \u2014 each one is a roll of the dice on hardware that is already failing.<\/strong><\/p>\n A drive making an unusual noise is the clearest case. Clicking, buzzing, a rhythmic tick that was not there before \u2014 that is mechanical, and every power-on risks more damage to the surfaces holding your files. Power it off and leave it off.<\/p>\n The same applies to a phone that has been in water. It may still turn on. Using it while there is moisture inside is how the board goes from recoverable to not.<\/p>\n Three ways people lose data here<\/strong><\/p>\n The drive failed<\/strong><\/p>\n Mechanical drives have moving parts and moving parts wear out. Solid-state drives fail differently \u2014 often with less warning, sometimes going from working to invisible with nothing in between.<\/p>\n Warning signs worth acting on: the machine takes far longer to start than it used to, files that were there last week will not open, the system freezes at the same point repeatedly, or the drive stops appearing at all. Any of these is a reason to back up now rather than later.<\/p>\n The device died with the data on it<\/strong><\/p>\n A laptop that will not power on does not mean the files are gone. Frequently the drive is untouched and the fault is elsewhere \u2014 a power circuit, a display, a board component. Removing the drive and reading it separately recovers everything.<\/p>\n Phones are harder, because storage is soldered to the board rather than sitting on a removable drive. A phone that will not turn on is a board-level question, and that is a different kind of work from pulling a drive out of a laptop.<\/p>\n It was deleted, and then written over<\/strong><\/p>\n Accidental deletion is the most recoverable scenario and the one people ruin fastest.<\/p>\n Deleted files are not immediately erased \u2014 the space they occupied is simply marked as available. They stay there until something else writes over them. Which means every minute of continued use, every photo taken, every app update, reduces what can be recovered.<\/p>\n If you have deleted something that matters, stop using that device immediately. Not after you have tried a few things.<\/strong><\/p>\n The storm season angle nobody plans for<\/strong><\/p>\n This is the local one, and it is worth taking seriously on the Peninsula.<\/p>\n Hampton Roads gets tropical systems, and what actually kills drives is rarely the water. It is the power. Outages, brownouts and the surge when power comes back are hard on electronics, and drives that were quietly ageing are exactly the things that do not survive it.<\/p>\n The pattern is predictable: a storm passes, power returns, and a fortnight later machines start failing to boot. The drives were already old. The surge finished them.<\/p>\n A surge protector on anything holding files you care about is a very small cost against that. So is having a backup that is not in the same building as the computer \u2014 a drive in a desk drawer next to the machine is not a backup from a flooding or a surge point of view.<\/p>\n What we can do, and what we cannot<\/strong><\/p>\n Honesty matters more here than anywhere else in our work, because this is the area where people are most vulnerable to being told what they want to hear.<\/p>\n We assess the device first and tell you what we are actually looking at. Where a drive is readable, or where the fault sits in the machine rather than the storage, recovery is often straightforward and we get your files back.<\/p>\n Where a drive has failed mechanically and needs to be opened in a controlled environment, that is specialist laboratory work, and we will tell you that rather than attempting something that would make it worse. Knowing where the line is, is part of the job.<\/strong><\/p>\n What nobody can honestly offer is a guarantee before looking. Any assessment that promises recovery sight unseen is selling confidence rather than a result.<\/p>\n Who this matters most to on the Peninsula<\/strong><\/p>\n The urgency here is not evenly spread, and the cases we take most seriously tend to fall into three groups.<\/p>\n Coursework is the first. A laptop that dies in the final fortnight of term at Christopher Newport is not really a hardware problem, and recovery in those weeks has its own rhythm.<\/p>\n Independent traders are the second. Plenty of them run everything from one machine, and while the hardware can be replaced by Friday, the ledgers, quotes and client history on it cannot.<\/p>\n The third is harder to put a number on. Devices come in holding photographs and records from a deployment, or from a family separation, and those exist in one place and nowhere else. Tell us when that is the case \u2014 it changes how cautiously we work and what we attempt first.<\/p>\n Bringing something in<\/strong><\/p>\n Tell us what happened and when, in as much detail as you can. Dropped, spilled on, storm, or simply stopped one morning \u2014 each points somewhere different.<\/p>\n Say clearly that the data is the priority. Repair work and recovery work pull in different directions, and things done to get a machine running again can make files harder to retrieve. If we know first, we take the other road.<\/p>\n Bring the power adapter, and bring the device as it is.
